Chapter 21: The Silence After

Three weeks later.

Elara was back in her old apartment. The bills were paid—Julian had made sure of that before his accounts were locked—but the silence was deafening. She hadn't touched her cello since Geneva.

The news was a constant cycle of the "Vane Scandal." Julian was under house arrest in a high-security facility, awaiting trial. The public hated him. The music world shunned her.

A knock at the door startled her. It wasn't the press. It was Elias, the man in the gray suit. He looked older, tired.

"He won't speak in his own defense," Elias said, handing her a small, velvet-lined box. "He told the lawyers that if he fights the kidnapping charge, it will force you to take the stand. He doesn't want you to have to look at him again."

Elara opened the box. Inside was her mother’s silver locket—the one that had been lost in the fire twenty years ago.

"How?" she breathed.

"He didn't just buy the ledger at that theater, Elara," Elias said. "He spent ten years tracking down the looters who picked through the ruins of your childhood home. He didn't want to control you. He wanted to give you back the pieces of yourself his father stole."

Elara looked at the locket, then at the silent cello in the corner. She realized then that Julian was playing a final, silent concerto: he was destroying himself to give her a clean slate.
