Chapter 7: The Blood Debt

The air in the room felt thin. Elara stared at the photo of her mother, then back at Julian. The resemblance was undeniable—the same high cheekbones, the same haunted intensity in the eyes.

"My mother died in a house fire when I was six," Elara whispered, her voice cracking. "It was an accident. An old heater..."

"It wasn't an accident," Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly low. He set his glass on the mahogany desk, the amber liquid sloshing. "My father was the one who signed the order to clear that block of tenements for a new development. Your mother refused to leave. She was... a protestor. A thorn in the Vane family’s side."

Elara felt the world tilt. The man she had just kissed, the man who was "protecting" her, was the son of the man who killed her mother.

"I didn't know," Julian stepped closer, his eyes pleading for a glimmer of understanding. "I found the ledger five years ago. I’ve spent every day since then trying to dismantle my father's empire from the inside. That deal you saw at the theater? That wasn't a crime I was committing, Elara. I was buying back the evidence of what happened that night to give to the authorities."

"So I'm just a project? A way to clear your conscience?" Elara shoved past him, but he caught her arm.

"You're the only thing that makes me want to be a better man," he breathed.

The tension snapped. Elara slapped him—a sharp, stinging crack that echoed in the silent room. Julian didn't flinch. He just looked at her with a profound, aching sadness.
