Elara didn’t sleep. She sat in her cramped studio apartment, the gold card mocking her from the table.
Julian Vane. The name was a legend in the city—a man who owned the skyline but was never seen in the light. He was the "Ghost of Wall Street," a billionaire with rumors of a blood-stained past.
She looked at her cello. She looked at her mounting pile of past-due bills. If she went to the police, Vane’s reach would find her before she finished the report. If she ran, she’d be hunted.
At 5:59 AM, a sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the curb.
Elara grabbed her cello and walked out. The door opened automatically. Inside, the air was chilled. Julian was sitting there, an iPad in his hand, looking as if he hadn't slept either—though he looked impeccable.
"You’re punctual. I like that," he said without looking up.
"Where are we going?" Elara asked, her voice trembling.
"To a lawyer," Julian replied, finally meeting her eyes. "You’re going to sign a document that says you are my fiancée. In exchange, your debts vanish, your career is guaranteed, and—most importantly—you stay alive."
"Why me?" she breathed. "You could have anyone."
Julian leaned forward, his gaze dropping to her hands. "Because you have nothing left to lose, Elara. And because I saw the way you looked at the man on the floor. You didn't look disgusted. You looked... curious. You have a darkness in you that matches mine."
He slid a leather folder toward her. The first page read: CONFIDENTIAL MARITAL PROTECTORATE AGREEMENT.
"Clause twelve," Julian pointed out. "If you fall in love with me, the contract is void, and you forfeit everything. Including your life. My heart is a liability I can't afford, and I expect yours to be the same."
Elara’s pen hovered over the line. "And if you fall for me?"
Julian let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Then we’re both dead."
